Snickers when he first arrived with us in March 2008

   Ode to Snickers

I limped through the shoot, horses flying at me
I looked around and above and what did I see
People yelling and shouting while the whips made a thud
On his skinny "old guy" all covered with crud
My nose rubbed bald by a halter too small
I hung my head and shuttered, resigned to it all
My hooves overgrown, frogs eaten by abscess
I didn't think I could stand this last sad test

Out of the crowd some ladies came near
They stood next to me and whispered in my ear
You're coming with us, there is no more to fear
You'll be cared for and loved in pastures so green
With other "old guys", where folks never are mean
And with plenty to eat your coat will soon gleam
Somehow I knew, this wasn't a dream

It took all of my strength to walk down that aisle
I limped and I faltered but I didn't fall
We traveled over five hours in a blinding snow storm
But eating hay in the trailer I was cozy and warm
When we arrived, I unloaded myself
Then stood in the yard, in the wind and the snow
Wasn't sure where I was intended to go
But the ladies took me to a wonderful stall
Filled with bedding and hay and I loved it all

I was groomed and pampered and then I saw Jim,
My hooves are better now much thanks to him
Dr. Laura gave me shots and Kenny did my teeth,
Two had to come out, but now I can eat
I've made new friends and I love my new home
But the best part is that I'm now not alone
I'm loved and I'm treasured as all horses should be
Please remember the "old guys" and save someone like me

Thank you to all those who helped save "the old guy" (who became our Snickers) at
Shipshewana in March: Deb, Theresa, Joy and Mary who patiently led him as he
limped onto the trailer from that horrible auction barn. Thanks to Dr. Laura Pylman, his
caring veterinarian and to Jim Cloutier, his patient and gentle farrier. Thanks to our
volunteers Greg, Roberta and Lindsay who helped care for Snickers.

And a great thank you to all who offered love, advice and donations. We hope you will
find peace in knowing you helped one of God’s angels.

Snickers was a gentle, kind soul who will be greatly missed. We thank God for the
honor of knowing Snickers and for being granted the grace to save him from traveling
the long truck trip to slaughter in Canada.

We know he will be standing there in Heaven, dozing in the sun and waiting for us
when we meet again.

~Farewell to Snickers~
It is with a heavy heart we tell you that our hero Snickers has passed away. As you
know, he was nearly 27 years old and suffered greatly from years of hard work and
neglect before we saved him from slaughter in March, 2008. With excellent care,
veterinary treatments and great farrier support, Snickers was able to spend his last 8
months without fear, sickness and starvation.

His days consisted of grazing in the pasture with his buddies and eating his hay and
grain. He loved to doze in the sun and enjoyed being groomed and pampered.
Snickers was always grateful for his special care. He stood quiet while the warm
blanket donated by Deb Jones was secured on him in the cold months. He would
stand and wait for his fly mask, knowing it would help him in the warmer days.
During the last two months, Snickers had
pain that grew progressively more acute
due to his greatly abscessed feet that had
been so long neglected before we got him
to his last and best home. He also had
Cushings and that was hard on him in
spite of the supplements and medicine we
were able to provide. Snickers had good
days and bad days, and then the bad days
started to become more frequent. He could
not do what he loved most and we could
not keep him pain free. So, surrounded by
love and in his favorite pasture place he
closed his dear, kind eyes for the last time.
