DYLAN
When his companion was being moved to a
new stable, Dylan was discovered left behind in
a field without water, food or shelter. It was sub
zero weather in March here in Michigan - it's a
wonder he had made it through the winter. He
was emaciated and ready to drop. When asked
about his future we were told he was free to a
good home. So, he was loaded in the trailer
and made the trip to his forever home. We
thought even if he just can get some food, water
and a blanket it will make his last days better.
Now he is a well rounded, beautiful guy. Today
his coat gleams in the sun. He enjoys his days
of grazing and napping. Dylan is a sweetheart
and always seems so surprised to receive a
treat that he does a little wobbly skip of
happiness. For a horse in his 30's, he moves
around pretty well.

Plum (sponsored by Chris Cooper)
Plum is a 1986 foal so he will be 24 this
coming January. He is a thoroughbred; born
and raised in Maryland. Plum raced on the track
as his first job. He was then trained to be an
open jumper and then converted to a Three-Day
Eventer. When he was 10, he was purchased
by a member of a Maryland-based Hunt and
was the primary horse for his owner, who was
Whipper-in for this hunt. He hunted until he was
18, then retired due to his vision becoming bad
due to cataracts. He was then bought simply to
be used as a good trail horse, but retired last
year due to injuries from complications of his
narcolepsy (he falls down when he has a
seizure), plus the cataracts and his back and
knees are  very sore from his jumping career.
Now he lives on the farm as a retiree just
grazing and adoring attention from his friends
here at Broken Road Rescue.

Ralphie
The rescue first got Ralphie in May of 2009.
He was at a high kill dog pound where they
gas or sell to research the pets that are not
wanted.  Ralphie had little hope of getting a
home by the look of his condition when he
arrived at the animal control. The animal
control labeled him as a 5 yr old
Dachshund/poodle.  He was adopted out
the first time on June, to an older woman
that wanted a companion.  He was
returned just 5 days later.  The reason…”
he didn’t do anything”  and her vet had told
her that he was hard of hearing.  She
wanted a perfect dog and could not keep
him for that.
Six weeks later he was adopted again, this time to a young girl and her mother. They had
spent several hours with Ralphie at the foster home to make sure it was a good match.
They were told all about his earring problem and being returned from the previous
adopter. They went home to think about it and a few days later came back for him. To our
shock, he was returned the very next day. The only explanation was it was a mistake to
take a deaf dog.

There is no way this gentle dog was going to go through the stress of being adopted and
returned again, so the foster home kept him.

Ralphie is one of the best dogs ever. Housebroken, quiet, kind and smart. He knows
sign language so to ask him to go to the door, come, sit etc is easy. His loves to play with
the tennis balls, throw the ball and he will run so fast to get it. Throw two balls and he
tries to put both in his mouth at once. Ralphie is the first to be at the door each afternoon
for the mile walk. He likes the retractable leash because he can run ahead of the other
dogs, smell things on the ground while the others catch up. He is the perfect dog and will
not be adopted out to anyone ever again.
