Since we founded Broken Road Rescue in March of 2008 we have saved over 300 animals. We started our organization in an attempt to save animals from overcrowded dog pounds, humane societies and animal control facilities. These pets are being euthanized simply because there is no room for them. With your help and the help of our foster homes, we will strive to save the lives of these beloved pets.

We need foster homes!
Please consider opening up your home to a dog, cat or kitten. Our rescue provides the food and vet care. To help, please fill out our Volunteer Application
|

Our rescue saves horses, ponies and
donkeys from auctions headed for slaughter.
To help raise funds for our rescue, we also
save unwanted dogs and cats from the animal
control facilities in the area. We take all
breeds of dogs and cats, young and old,
healthy and sick. They are taken to our vet to
be spayed or neutered and given all
vaccinations and heart worm tested. If they
are heart worm positive we get them treated.
We foster as many as we can in home
environments and advertise on Pet Finder, go
to pet stores for adoption events, and take a
pet on TV, WLNS Ch 6 (Lansing) each
Tuesday for The Pet of the Day. Those
interested in adopting must go through an
application process. Our goal is to place the
pet in the best home that will keep them for
the rest of their lives. We also state in our
contract that the pet comes back to us in the
future if something should happen and that
new owner can not care for the pet any
longer. We never want our animals to have to
worry for their lives again.

On one of Michigan's bitter cold days, this sweet Chow mix was found
wandering near Flint city limits. He was dodging traffic, walking in snow,
road salt, and slush until his poor feet were torn and bleeding. But this
lucky guy had a guardian angel, well really a whole host of guardian
angels!
The first angel braved the cold and traffic to approach a strange, hurting
dog. She then drove to Genessee County Animal Control to report the lost
dog in case his owner looked for him. She would not leave him there
because the animal control's policy is not to adopt out Chow or Chow mix
dogs, and he would be destroyed if not claimed. And with no collar or ID he
would only have a few days to be claimed. Then she made some calls and
the volunteer network started moving.
Volunteers from Friends of Genessee County Animal Control contacted
Broken Road Rescue to see if we had room for this very needy dog. BRR
volunteers immediately went to work finding a foster home, arranging for
much-needed veterinary care, and posting the dog's photo and info for
adoption on Pet Finder website. They named him Yogi Bear because of
his fuzzy bear-like fur and his cuddly character. Yogi's feet began to heal,
he started gaining weight and he was safe and warm enjoying a loving
foster home.

A Happy Tail
Weeks later Genessee County Animal
Control called Yogi's rescuer and said
a man had reported a lost dog fitting
Yogi's description. She gave him the
Broken Road Rescue number. The
man was heartbroken. He had been
searching and was hoping against
hope that this was his dog. HIs photos
and other information made it very
likely that Yogi Bear's journey was
over. Two days later Yogi (real name
Buddy) and his family were reunited.
And in between tears, hugs and tail
wags we learned that somehow Buddy,
age 15, had either wandered or was taken away from his home. Someone
might have stolen him to use as "bait" for fighting dogs. But instead Buddy
was safe and reunited with his loving family, all because someone stopped
to help one of God's creatures. Kindness always works.
