Broken Road Rescue Inc. started without a name, without a plan and with only a mission to help out a group of volunteers who were going to the Shipshewana, Indiana auction on Good Friday in March, 2008.
It was our first experience at a "loose horse auction" in a direct-to-slaughter sale. This means the horses are not even led into an arena, they are not shown by handlers and the bidding is done by guessing the horse's weight and determining the "meat" price. Horses are shoved in a chute and then they are whipped and made to run down an aisle while people, mostly kill buyers, yell out bids. Bidders are on the floor, standing on cat-walks above the horses, and hanging on fences. It is a fast-paced, violent, and cruel ordeal for terrified horses of all ages including mothers and foals.
We were blessed that day because we joined other volunteers who until that trip had never met each other. We had communicated via the internet on the Alex Brown Message Board where donations were gathered to purchase horses. Thanks to the generosity of people, mostly those we have never met, we were able to SAVE 15 horses and a mule. Among them was Snickers and Pablo. What an emotional day and what an experience. The wonderful, kind friends we made that day will always remain in our hearts. They are: Joy, Theresa, Mary and Deb.
We were compelled to be there and we knew it was a directive from God that we needed to help these creatures. Mostly we called on Him for guidance and for the strength to get through the ordeal. We also prayed for God to turn the hearts of the bidders and those running the auction, so that they might see the benefits of kindness and assist us that day. God also turned some hearts that day and the auction staff, many hardened by years of this abuse, stopped what they were doing to help us load horses. In fact, one of the managers later thanked us for our good conduct and told us he would help us in the future.
During the following weeks we became more aware of the need for rescue volunteers and our plan to actually form a rescue organization began to evolve. It started mostly when friends saw our efforts and our rescue horses and began to give us donations and offer encouragement. We decided to "get official" and get started on the mission of our lives.
Broken Road Rescue Inc. was named because of the wonderful song, God Bless the Broken Road. We feel the name is perfect for several reasons: our rescue is located on a road that is "broken" by another cross road; and, we feel that our rescue creatures have so many untold journeys down so many unhappy broken roads, but now have crossed the last broken road to this happy place. As the song says, "And I know it's true, God Blessed the Broken Road that lead me straight to you."
All of these horses were rescued from auction where we are their last chance before being sold to slaughter. Once safely home, all horses were quarantined for a minimum of 21 days, during which they were treated by the veterinary, equine dentist, and farrier. All of our horses are thoroughly evaluated to determine their temperament and training. They receive remedial training if necessary before searching for the perfect partner. A successful partnership creates a bond of trust and friendship for both horse and rider, and it is our goal to find that match for every horse we save.
